CPI(M) rules out Third Front

  Inspite of "electoral disaster" in
West Bengal and Kerala, the CPI(M) today ruled out forming a
Third Front to counter the UPA or NDA in national politics,
while stressing that it would endeavour for a Left and
democratic alternative.
     "No Third Front will be formed to find an alternative.
There may be electoral alliance locally with non-BJP and
non-Congress democratic parties, but no Front will be formed,"
CPI(M) Politburo member Nirupam Sen told a press conference
here quoting party General Secretary Prakash Karat.
     Addressing the 23rd state conference of the party here,
Karat said that CPI(M) would strive for a Left and democratic
alternative to the UPA and NDA.
    "For that we have to increase the strength of the Left
parties," Sen said quoting Karat.
    Admitting that CPI(M) had become weaker because of
"electoral disaster" in West Bengal and Kerala and that it has
also not become any stronger in other states, he said that the
party, keeping such a situation in view, would have to take
steps to increase its base.
    Sen said that Karat also discussed the draft political
resolution for the next party congress in Kerala to be held in
April to chalk out the party's strategy in view of present
political situation in the country.
     "The general secretary said that we have to organise
the poorer and backward classes as also the minorities to
fight the onslaught of capitalism and imperialism in the
country in order to find a Left alternative," Sen said.

Taslima book sales jump after controversy

The seventh part of Taslima
Nareen's autobiography 'Nirbasan' (Exile) is selling like hot
cakes at the Kolkata Book Fair, a day after it was released
amidst controversy.
"We have ordered a reprint. The first print of 1000
copies is sold out. We are overwhelmed with the response,"
publisher Shibani Mukherji of the People's Book Society said.
Bookstores and stalls at the fair are already running
out of stock.
"Women, in particular, are making a beeline for our
stall," the publisher said insisting that the contents of the
memoirs had nothing controversial.
The latest installment in the series of her memoirs,
'Nirbasan' gives an account of the controversial Bangladeshi
author's plight following her expulsion from her adopted home
of Kolkata in November 2007.
Written in Bengali, the new book traces the
circumstances in which she was bundled out by the government
to New Delhi and the resultant mental trauma and insecurity of
not having a home anywhere in the world.
"It talks about the period 2007-08 of my life
beginning from the attack on me during a book release function
at Hyderabad. Later on, chaos was created in Kolkata and I
was asked to leave the city," Nasreen told Media Person from New Delhi.

A day after cancellation of the official release of her book at the Kolkata Book Fair
following protests, controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima
Nasreen today claimed that three Bengali directors who had
planned films on her life and novels had now backtracked.
"The contracts were signed. But the directors have
suddenly fallen silent," Taslima told from New Delhi on a
proposed biopic on her life and films on two novels 'Shodh'
(Revenge) and 'Nimontron' (Invitation).
"I do not know what has happened to them. Who has asked
them not to make the films?" she questioned, hinting that the
directors may have withdrawn apparently under pressure from
fundamentalists.
On the release yesterday of the seventh part of her
autobiography 'Nirbasan' (Exile) by her publisher People's
Book Society after the official release was cancelled in the
wake of protests by right wing groups, Taslima said, "The
issue is not the book at all. Taslima is the issue.
"Neither the fundamentalists nor those in the government
have read the book. Even if someone organises a 'Taslima
Flower Show', they will demand a ban," said the 49-year-old
author who had to flee Bangladesh in 1994 after she was
accused of hurting religious sentiments with her novel 'Lajja'
(Shame).

ਉਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਜੇਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਕਾਰ  ਚ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਜਿੰਮੇਵਾਰ ਹਾਂ, ਇਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਕੰਮਕਾਜ ਦੀ ਹਮਾਇਤ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ। ਇਸਲਈ ਅਸੀਂ ਖੁਦਰਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਚ ਸੌ ਫੀਸਦੀ ਪੁੰਜੀ ਨਿਵੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਕੀਤਾ, ਪਟਰੋਲ-ਡੀਜਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੀਮਤਾਂ ਚ ਵਾਧੇ ਦਾ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਗੈਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੀਮਤਾਂ ਚ ਵਾਧਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਿਆ। ਖਾਦ ਸੁਰਖਿਆ ਐਕਟ ਬਾਰੇ ਹੈਰਨਗੀ ਜਾਹਿਰਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਸਾ ਕਿਥੋਂ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ? ਲੋਕਪਾਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਟੈਂਡ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਲੋਕਾਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਸਲਾ ਹੈ ਐਪਰ ਲੋਕਸਭਾ ਚ ਚਰਚਾ ਸਮੇ ਲੋਕਪਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ ਦਿਤਾ ਗਿਆ, ਰਾਜ ਦੇਕੰਮ ਚ ਕੇਦਰ ਦੀ ਦਖਲਅੰਦਾਜੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਬਰਦਾਸਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਸਕਦੇ।
ਕਾਂਗਰਸੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਨਾੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਿੰਗੁਰ ਮਸਲੇ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਮਾਰਕਸੀ ਆਗੁਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਰਾਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਨੰਦੀਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਜਾਣ ਸਮੇਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਕੋਈ ਕਾਂਗਰਸੀ ਆਗੂ ਹਮਾਇਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ। ਜਦੋਂ ਇਕ ਕਾਂਗਰਸੀ ਨੂੰ ਫੋਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਨਾਂ ਫੋਨ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦਿਤਾ। ਸਾਡਾ ਸਿਰਫ ਇਕ ਕੈਬੀਨੇਟ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜ ਰਾਜ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਟੀਮੈਂਟ ਚ ਕਮਰਾ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਉਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਚ ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਦੀ ਘੱਟਗਿਣਤੀ ਦੀਸਰਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਚਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਣਮੁਲ ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਨਾਲ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਚਲ ਰਹੀ

ਸੂਤਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ  ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ ਦੇ ਦੁਜੇ ਧੜਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਮੋਰਚਾ ਦੇ ਉਮੀਦਵਾਰਾਂ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਕਈ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਹਮਾਇਤ ਦੀ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਜਾਰੀ ਹੈ। ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਇਕ ਆਗੁ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ  ਕੋਲਕਾਤਾ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜਰਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਜੀਤ ਚ ਛਪਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਚੋਣ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਖਬਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। 

Prayers not enough for a better world’

Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lamaon Thursday expressed his disappointment overcorruption that was spreading like a cancerous disease and urged youths to work towards building a healthy society.

Addressing a gathering in Kolkata , the Dalai Lama expressed his bewilderment over how some Indians were corrupt despite being religious. "I can understand that in China, they don't care much about moral principles and run only after power and money. But in India, people pray and make offerings to God in the morning and then step out and indulge in corruption. How can this happen? Either believe in God and live a principled life. Or worship money, be corrupt and exploit," he said.

Pointing out how India has a history of an ancient and sophisticated civilization compared with that of Greece and China, the Dalai Lama said Indians have traditionally been gurus and Tibetans chelas (disciples). "When I see some part of my guru being corrupt, as a chela I feel ashamed," he lamented.

Though the Tibetan spiritual leader did not make a reference to the movement launched by Team Anna and their insistence on a Jan Lok Pal bill, he said a better community could not be created by law and Parliament."Don't blame a few politicians for the ill that plagues the society. They are from done through individual actions. In order to act, one requires will power that can come through truth and conviction," he said.

Urging students to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, the spiritual leader felt real transformation of India needed to start from rural areas instead of cities. "Please build this nation in a balanced way with a longterm and holistic vision ," the Dalai Lama said.

"I belong to 20th century. My generation is ready to say goodbye. Despite many positive developments, it was primary the century of war, nuclear weapon, untold misery and suffering. It is on the shoulders of the young generation of the 21st century that the responsibility ofcreating a new and healthy society rests," the Dalai Lama added. "A better world will not be achieved through prayers. It has to bedone through individual actions. In order to act, one requires will power that can come through truth and conviction," he said.

India 95th among 183 countries in Corruption Perception Index

India's image on tackling graft
seems to have gone from bad to worse in the perception of
people dealing with the system, with its rank slipping to a
low 95 among 183 countries in Transparency International's
Corruption Perception Index (CPI).
While the debate continues in India over an anti-graft
ombudsman, the study by the international watchdog shows the
country's image declining consistently over the past three
years. This year, the country scores 3.1 on 10, with 10 being
the highest score.
Since 2007 when India was ranked 72 among 180 countries
with a score of 3.5, the score has declined, so have the
rankings. Last year, India was placed at 87.
The CPI ranks countries based on how corrupt their public
sector is perceived to be and is a composite index that draws
on data and studies by a number of specialised international
agencies through a complex process.
India's score is a result of an average of 13 studies
including World Bank's Country Performance and Institutional
Assessment, World Economic Forum Executive Opinion Survey and
Global Insight Country Risk Ratings, among others.
New Zealand is at the top spot with a score of 9.5
followed by Finland and Denmark. The countries that occupy the
bottom ranks in the index are Somalia, North Korea, Myanmar
and Afghanistan, which are helmed by unstable governments and
conflicts.
With the unearthing of major scams, arrests of
influential people over corruption and a movement for a Lokpal
stealing headlines in India, people associated with
Transparency International India said since the study is a
measurement of perception, these factors could have marginally
contributed to the decline.
